Are You Suffering from Dryness? You May Have TEWL?

Every cell in your body needs water.

Water makes up more than half of your body weight. You lose water each day when you go to the bathroom, sweat, and even when you breathe. You lose water even faster when the weather is really hot, when you’re physically active, or if you have a fever– and sometimes you can see it in the mirror.

What is TEWL?

TEWL, or transepidermal water loss, is the process by which your skin loses water due to a damaged skin barrier. TEWL is a process that your skin naturally controls, but other external factors can impact it either positively or negatively. When your skin is healthy, TEWL is equivalent to skin hydration. When you have high levels of TEWL, it means something on either side of your skin barrier is messing with your natural process. TEWL mainly occurs throughout the night, which is why it’s important to invest in skincare that can provide enduring nourishment and protection.

What causes TEWL?

TEWL can be caused by a number of factors, such as humidity levels (low humidity increases TEWL) and certain topical treatments that strip moisture because they are high in pH.

Ways to recognize TEWL

If you are experiencing TEWL, you may notice persistent dryness, flakiness, itchiness, rough texture, and fine lines. These are the most common symptoms, but sometimes TEWL can even lead to more severe acne or eczema. If you’re experiencing these symptoms in the morning, you may need a new nighttime skincare routine.

Ways to prevent TEWL

  • Avoid harsh facial cleansers and skincare products. Products that have high pH levels and silicones can strip the skin of its moisture. Try Veracity's Advanced Hydration Cleanser for a gentle, hormone-safe option that also supports your skin barrier and its ability to retain moisture.

  • Use gentle products that are made of humectants and occlusives, such as an oil-based cleanser. Humectants (such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid) attract moisture to the skin and occlusives (such as squalane and shea butter) help seal water in.

  • Adaptogenic and biomimetic products (such as our BioEvolve Moisturizer and BioEvolve Serum) are also a must for training your skin to trap in moisture. These products adapt to your skin’s unique bio needs by strengthening the skin’s barrier and deliver an infusion of long-lasting hydration.

  • If you really want to step it up, invest in a humidifier to prevent severe dryness throughout the night.
