Ethoxylated ingredients help water bind with dirt and oil in order to clean skin and hair. While they serve as a cleanser in beauty products, these ingredients are produced with known carcinogen Ethylene Oxide, and are often contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, another known carcinogen. This category can be harder to avoid, since names are hidden on ingredient labels, including Ceteareth-20, Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Cetearyl Alcohol with Polysorbate 60 or Ceteareth-20, PEGS (polyethylene Glycol), Polysorbate-20, and many ingredients ending in “-eth”.
