Unlock Your Gut Health: The Complete Protocol

Bloating, low energy, cravings – the symptoms of poor health can be a struggle to manage both mentally and physically.

Your gut health plays a crucial role in everything from digestion to mood and metabolism. When the gut is out of balance, it can lead to a range of problems that impact your overall well-being. The good news is, you can repair your gut! Here’s our complete guide to better gut health—packed with lifestyle tips, dietary recommendations, and supplements that can help you regain balance.

SYMPTOMS OF POOR GUT HEALTH

  • Digestive issues: Bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, or heartburn.

  • Food intolerances: Difficulty digesting certain foods, leading to discomfort or digestive upset.

  • Cravings for sugar or unhealthy foods: Imbalanced gut bacteria can increase cravings for junk food or sugar.

  • Unintended weight changes: Difficulty losing or gaining weight.

  • Fatigue: Feeling constantly tired or experiencing low energy levels.

  • Brain fog: Having difficulty with memory and concentration

  • Mental health issues: Mood swings, anxiety, or depression, often linked to the gut-brain axis.

  • Frequent infections: A weakened immune system leading to colds, flu, or other infections.

  • Autoimmune conditions: Increased inflammation and susceptibility to autoimmune disorders.

  • Skin problems: Acne, eczema, psoriasis, or other skin irritations.

  • Bad breath: Persistent foul-smelling breath despite good oral hygiene.

WHAT CAUSES GUT HEALTH ISSUES?

Leaky Gut Syndrome, or "intestinal permeability," occurs when the gut lining is compromised, allowing toxins, undigested food, and microbes to enter the bloodstream. This condition can be triggered by factors like poor diet, stress, medications, and environmental toxins. When the gut's protective barrier, known as the GALT (Gut Associated Lymphatic Tissue), weakens, it leads to various health issues such as IBS, bloating, diraahea, constipation, SIBO, UTIs, digestive problems, autoimmune diseases, skin conditions, and chronic inflammation.

To heal leaky gut, a 4-step approach is recommended:

  • Remove harmful substances

  • Replace essential nutrients

  • Re-inoculate with probiotics

  • Repair the gut lining.

Foods like bone broth, aloe, yogurt, and fermented foods can support this process, along with targeted supplements. Restoring gut health is crucial for overall well-being and immune function.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PROBIOTICS

Keeping your gut microbiome healthy is key to fending off leaky gut. This is where probiotics come in – they are crucial to supporting a diverse microbiome.

Probiotics are found in a myriad of foods we eat - yogurts, kimchi, sauerkraut - but oftentimes we don’t eat enough of these foods to build and maintain a healthy gut microbiome. This can lead to gut dybiosis, which is the imbalance of microorganicsms in the gut and intestines due to a reduction in microbial diversity. Those with gut dybiosis often experience digestion issues, food senstitivities, and chronic bad breath. Supplementing with probiotics supports the existing bacteria in your gut and introduces helpful new ones.

VERACITY'S TIPS TO A HEALTHIER GUT

  • Limit antibiotic use. While antibiotics can be necessary at times, they can disrupt gut flora. Only use them when prescribed and discuss alternative options with your healthcare provider. Only use antibiotics when necessary and we recommend taking a probiotic supplement during and after antibiotic treatment.

  • Add variety to your diet. This promotes microbiome diversity - fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes provide a variety of fiber and nutrients that enhance gut microflora.

  • Eat probiotic & prebiotic-rich foods. Incorporating foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso and natto will provide beneficial bacteria. Prebiotics are non-digestible fibers that feed good bacteria - things like garlic, onions, leeks, asparagus and bananas.

  • Limit processed foods and sugars. High amounts of processed foods and sugars can lead to an imbalance of beneficial bacteria and disrupt your gut lining, leaving you more susceptible to infections.

  • Chronic stress can disrupt your gut barrier permeability, which can cause leaky gut syndrome and decrease immunity. Practices like tapping, breath work, yoga, meditation, and regular physical activity can reduce stress and promote a healthy gut.

  • Mindful eating. Take at least 20 minutes for each meal. Chewing your food thoroughly and eating your meals slowly can help reduce bloating and indigestion, while helping to maintain a balanced gut microbiome.

  • Prioritize sleep. A lack of sleep and irregular sleep patterns can cause your gut barrier to become more permeable, allowing in infection. Aim for 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night to help maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria. Good quality sleep is crucial for gut health.

THE POWER DUO FOR GUT AND METABOLIC HEALTH

The gut and metabolism are deeply connected— gut bacteria influence how efficiently the body digests food, absorbs nutrients, and burns calories. A healthy, diverse gut microbiome can enhance metabolism by improving digestion and nutrient absorption, which in turn helps regulate appetite and manage weight more effectively.
